'Love and Respect' Study

'Love and Respect' series will be held at the First Christian Church of Red Bluff is inviting men and women to join them in a study of 'Love and Respect' at 6:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 926 Madison St.
This study group will meet every Wednesday for 14 weeks. A portion of Dr. Emerson and Sarah Eggerichs' video series 'Love and Respect' will be viewed each week followed by a discussion led by Craig and Charlene Love.
The study covers three major questions:
  • Why do we negatively react to each other in marriage? This will be explained in what is called the crazy cycle.
  • How do I best motivate my spouse? The energizing cycle answers this question.
  • What if my spouse does not respond to me? The rewarded cycle informs us what to do.
A wife has one driving need — to feel loved. When that need is met, she is happy.
A husband has one driving need — to feel respected. When that need is met, he is happy. There is no cost to attend but pre-registration is requested. A book to go along with the series will be available at cost for those wishing to purchase one.
Information and registration is available from the Loves at 527-1506.

An Ornament

Colorful lights, white lights blinking. Shinny bulbs in red, gold or green. Popcorn strung with cranberries, bows and fragile memories surrounded by tinsel and topped by angels.

Beautiful and unique, Christmas trees reflect the creativity of the owner. Some are bright and shinny, others elegant. Trees can create warm feelings of nostalgia or push the envelope of tradition with modern trimmings.

I came across an interesting passage in the Bible the other day. Proverbs 19:11 says, “A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger and it is his glory to overlook a transgression.” I wondered what the word, ‘glory meant, so I looked it up. Turns out, the first meaning on the list is the word, ‘ornament’.

Well that made me pause. I’ve heard a variety of metaphors used to describe Christians such as sheep, lights, and soldiers, but I’d never heard of a comparison to an ornament.

So God tells us that if we are slow to anger and willingly overlook a transgression we can be one of His ornaments.

“Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. Therefore, if a man cleanses himself…he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.”

During this Christmas season, ask God to use you to decorate His tree.

Christmas lights

I just love this time of the year, when all the Christmas lights are up on the trees lining Main Street and people decorate their houses with lights, especially the ‘icicle’ lights that hang down from the string.
I got to thinking about Christmas lights and how pretty they are and I began to see some parallels between Christmas lights and ‘Christ-lights’, (Christians).
Sometimes, it’s easier to understand the spiritual by the natural. So think about these as you read. You may be able to add a few of your own.
Christmas lights…
1)…enhance anything.
2)…have an external power source.
3)…can be used anytime-not just at Christmas.
4)…come in all colors.
5)…can be plugged in by any one, not just by expert electricians.
6)…shine no matter who’s around.
7)…have something wrong with them when they aren’t shinning.
8)…that are tiny/weak can still sparkle pretty in the dark.
9)…have to be wired in individually.
10)…shine for the benefit of those around them.
11)…are effective when displayed in new and creative ways.
12)…shine more intense as it gets darker.
13)…are unable to function when one is broken.
14)…are often unplugged and put away after Christmas.
15)…are useless when unplugged.

…prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as light in the world. Philippians 2:15

St. Andrew’s Honors Patron Saint at Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans Celebration

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Corning will honor its patron saint on Sunday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. with a traditional Scottish celebration and blessing of the clan tartans.

Regional Missioner, The Rev. Maryly Adair, will officiate at the service to be held at the 100-year-old church located on the corners of First and Marin streets. Bagpipers will lead the procession and provide music throughout the worship service. A traditional Scottish meal will follow.

According to church tradition, St. Andrew’s was crucified for his faith on an X-shaped cross because he did not feel worthy to die on the same kind of cross as his Lord, Jesus Christ. The X-shaped cross, also known by the ancient name of Saltyre, appears on the British flag conjoined with the cross of St. George signifying the union of England and Scotland.

For more information about the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans celebration please contact the North Valley Episcopal Ministry at 527-5205 or via email at nvem@sbcglobal.net.

Jews for Jesus speaker at First Christian Church

First Christian Church invites all to hear Robyn Wilk speak at the church at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Wilk, an evangelist with the Jews for Jesus organization, is stationed in New York City. She will be sharing the historical roots of the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah and its current significance for people from all walks of life.

Jews for Jesus is an agency that proclaims that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel and Savior of the world. "What could be more Jewish than following the Messiah?" says Wilk, who considers herself 100 percent Jewish and 100 percent Christian.
Robyn Wilk grew up in New York City in a conservative Jewish family. When she was 12,they moved to Kansas where Robyn attended junior high and high school.

At Wichita State University, Wilk's Christian suite mate told her about Jesus. Wilk said, "I told God that I did not want to be a Christian but I needed to know what I ought to believe. I received help from an unexpected source. Josh MacDowell, a famous author, lecturer and apologist spoke at our school.
"I found his explanations credible and was convinced that Jesus was the Messiah. As a Jew, I felt torn because this would not be acceptable to my Jewish family and friends.
"I wrestled with the issue until I realized that God had answered my prayer and I needed t accept that answer. I made an all out commitment to Jesus in 1981.
"Later I was excited to find there are other Jews who believe in Jesus."

Wilk is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a master's degree in music and of Fuller Theological Seminary with a master's degree in missiology.
For a time she was a member of the Liberated Wailing Wall, the "mobile evangelistic music team" of Jews for Jesus. Later she served as the leader of the San Francisco branch of Jews for Jesus. Since January of 2007 she has led the agencies' missionary training center in New York City as its director.

Jews for Jesus was founded by Moishe Rosen, a Jew who has believed in Jesus for more than 35 years. The organization has permanent branches in eight North American cities and five countries.

Dr. Rosen is quick to point out that he did not "start" Jews for Jesus. "Jews for Jesus began about 2,000 years ago. Jesus' first disciples were Jewish, and there have been some Jewish people who have believed in Him ever since."

Wilk will also conduct an "Everyday Evangelism Workshop" at the church on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
Wilk says, "If you can witness to a Jewish person you can witness to just about anybody!"
Drawing from the same materials she uses to train missionaries to reach Jews around the world, she will teach attendees how to share the gospel right here in the north state.

All are invited to attend both events.
Information is available from First Christian Church at 527-4688.

Movie Review: “The Golden Compass”

Hyping the Willful Rebellious Liar: “The Golden Compass”

By Dr. Ted Baehr, Publisher of MOVIEGUIDE®
Special to ASSIST News Service
HOLLYWOOD, CA (ANS) -- Despite the hype, “The Golden Compass” is a mediocre movie with lots of eye candy and too many boring speeches. However, given the promotion budget, many people will see the movie and probably will forget how dull the first two-thirds are, because the battle sequences are so engaging.

Without going into the review of the movie (that you will be able to access on http://www.movieguide.org the day the movie opens), it is important to understand what’s wrong with children seeing “The Golden Compass.”

While most commentators are focusing on the atheism and paganism in the book, the movie has been slightly toned down so that the more troubling elements are the person of the heroine herself and some of the movie’s themes.

Taizé

An hour of prayer, music and silence

Four Sundays in Advent; December 2nd, 9th, 16th, & 23rd
4:00 -5:00 p.m.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 510 Jefferson Street, Red Bluff, California

Taizé prayer involves the repetition of simple sung Christian phrases. The experience of singing these phrases nourishes us on a deep non-verbal level. The service consists of quiet chanting, scripture reading, petitions and silence. It allows us to come together to the cross during this Advent Season to pray, to bring our burdens and the burdens of our world and all that is in our hearts to Jesus Christ.

TaizĂ© is the name of the village in France where Brothers of an Ecumenical community reside and where young adults have been gathering for this type of prayer since the late 1950’s. Many churches and retreat centers throughout the world regularly offer this type of meditative communal prayer.

“Nothing is more conducive to a communion with the living God than a meditative common prayer with, as its high point, singing that never ends and that continues in the silence of one’s heart when one is alone again.”
Brother Roger of Taizé

New women’s Bible study held at NVB Church

A new women’s Bible study is being held at North Valley Baptist Church, a Family Life Fellowship, according to Pastor David
Lamberson.

It is being led by member Sharon Camp and is held each Thursday morning at the church starting at 9:30 p.m. with coffee and fellowship; study from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All women from the community are invited to bring their Bibles and attend.

A study of the book of Ephesians is current, with emphasis on “the Christian home and how it relates to the work of the Holy Spirit,” “the strategy of Satan and how we can be victorious over him” and “each Christian’s responsibility in light of our great wealth in Christ.” According to Camp, her desire is “to get women excited about Bible study and able to apply the truths learned in their everyday life.” The purpose of the study is to increase knowledge of the Bible and understanding its meaning in daily lives. Prayer is an integral part of the sessions. There will be a time for witnessing and applications of the truths that are learned.

Camp is the wife of a pastor, Scott Camp. They have led a number of churches over the years. She has lead Bible studies for over 30 years in Orange County, the Bay Area and Denver, Colo. She worked for Promise Keepers at the National Headquarters in Denver, Colo., and was project manager for Stand-in-the-Gap Million Man gathering in Washington, D.C. “Sharon is a wonderful teacher,” attendee Jeannie Fletcher stated. “She has a great heart for what she does.”

The church is located at 345 David Ave. Those interested in more information may call the church at 527-0543.

Pray for rain in Georgia

Georgia has been suffering from an intense drought in recent months that is so severe it has threatened supplies of drinking water.
Recently, Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue has called for a prayer service to call on the Lord for relief from the drought.

Of course, droughts are nothing new and neither is praying for them to end. The Old Testament records a long drought that occurred during Elijah’s time in 1 Kings 18. When Elijah earnestly prayed for rain, the Lord answered him with a downpour. According to James 5, we have the assurance that if we pray as earnestly as Elijah did, we too can have our prayers answered.

This is an opportunity for the Body of Christ to demonstrate the love of God. The water shortage in the South is not only a Georgia problem, it hurts us all.
Proverbs 11:25 says, “The generous man will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered.”

2 Chronicles 7:13-15 tells us, “If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain… and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place.”
Let’s join with Georgia, and the rest of the south by calling on the name of the Lord to pray for rain.

Smith to speak at Calvary Chapel

A visiting guest speaker, Pastor Chuck Smith, will be teaching at Calvary Chapel Red Bluff at 12375 Paskenta Road for both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services this Sunday.

Pastor Chuck Smith, as he is affectionately called by his congregation, was taught the scriptures from his youth as Timothy was. He has remained a student of the word of God, as well as being gifted by God as a teacher of the word. He has been given the ability to teach God's word in a simple, low-key, yet powerful manner that listeners of all ages can easily learn and apply to their daily lives. His teaching has inspired hundreds of young men to go into the ministry.

More than 30 years ago Smith felt the Lord calling him away from the church he was pastoring in Corona and move to Costa Mesa to begin the ministry of Calvary Chapel. What happened to this fellowship is a testimony to the miraculous ability of Jesus Christ to build His church in this 20th Century when a man is yielded to the leading of God.

Smith's radio ministry, "The Word For Today," is heard an hundreds stations around the country and through Calvary Satellite Network he is heard worldwide. Each week thousands of his taped Bible studies are sent all around the world to people studying the Word.

Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans

(Pictured) Jefferson Pipe Band featured in Scottish celebration of the Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans.

RED BLUFF — On Sunday, the Jefferson Pipe Band will perform Celtic bagpipe and drum music at the Red Bluff Presbyterian Church, 838 Jefferson St.
An 11 a.m. Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans worship service will honor the Scottish faith traditions practiced by the Presbyterian Church.
A processional will open the service, led by the church Sexton carrying the Beadle (Bible), followed by Banners of Faith, the Jefferson Pipe Band featuring bagpipers and drummers, the Presbyterian Church choir, Pastor Jack Eisel and church lay readers. Scottish pipe hymns will be featured throughout the service, as well as blessing of individuals and families of Scottish descent. Traditional Celtic pipe hymns and melodies will continue after the service during a coffee hour featuring traditional Scottish shortbread, fruits, coffee and punch.
The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans custom began in response to English attempt to extinguish Scottish culture. In 1746, a Parliamentary Act sought to deny the Scottish people the right to wear the kilt, plaid or any tartan garment. Bagpipes, as well, were banned and defined as a weapon in the continued effort to destroy highland clan identity. Arrest, imprisonment or banishment to the colonies was the price paid for almost 40 years, to those disobeying the law in the highlands. During this time the women of the highland clans, whose men were far from home, would take a small piece of their tartan to the Kirk (church) to be secretly blessed and to pray for Heaven’s protection for their clan and its members. Thus came the Scottish celebration known as the Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans.
This historically based ceremony came to fruition in the US when Dr. Peter Marshall, an emigrant from Coatdyke, Scotland, held the first Kirkin’ in 1941 at the New York Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.
For more information about the Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans, contact the Red Bluff Presbyterian Church at 527-0372.

Enjoy the spiritual advice of Dungy

Last year's NFL Super Bowl winning coach for the Indianapolis Colts Tony Dungy recently wrote a book called, Quiet Strength, Men's Bible Study. The book will be presented at First Southern Baptist Church at 585 Kimball in Red Bluff beginning on Nov. 3 at 9 a.m.

Men who are interested in Dungy's philosophy and spiritual strength are urged to attend.
Dungy says of the Game Plan session, "When I was fired from Tampa Bay, I knew that my game plan needed to change. I had planned to be there much longer than I was. And I knew a change would be difficult for my family. But God's plans were different, and I quickly learned the importance of following God's plan, and glorifying Him no matter where I am. This section of the Bible study will challenge you to find God in the midst of frustrated plans."
The first session will be led by Kyle Turner, principal of Foothill High School. He has also coached at Shasta College and for the UC Davis Aggies. Pastor Tom Turner, a former high school coach, who was fortunate enough to coach several NFL players during their youth, strongly recommends this study.
Following the Game Plan session will be weekly studies defining Real Strength, Success, Security, Significance and the Legacy men would like to leave. All men are invited to attend.
For further information you can reach Pastor Tom at (530) 227-7173.

Connect the Thots 27

Connect the Thots is all about determining the common thread that binds three seemingly unrelated clues.
For example, what one idea ties together:
Baby in a manger, Death on a cross, & King of Kings
'Thot' =
Jesus.
Easy enough?
Give this quiz a try - the answers are at the bottom of post.

1. Seth, the garden of Eden, disobedience to God
2. an early inheritance, riotous living, friendlessness and starvation
3. a wife named Keturah, a son named Ishmael, a covenant with God
4. cousin of Barnabas, profitable to Paul's ministry, author of a gospel
5. the darts of the wicked, the Christian's trial, Nebuchadnezzar's furnace
6. Jedidiah, a fleet of ships, "Divide the living child in two"
7. heaves of grain, sun, moon, and eleven stars, bowing in worship
8. Hagar, banishment to the wilderness, "a wild man"
9. husband of one wife, grave, not given to much wine
10. King Eglon of Moab, King Joash of Judah, King Sennacherib of Assyria

Answers to quiz:
1. Adam and Eve 2. the parable of the lost (prodigal) son 3. Abraham or Abram 4. Mark 5. fiery things 6. Solomon 7. dreams of Joseph 8. Ishmael 9. qualifications for deacons 10. victims of assassination

Bethel Assembly of God in RB acting on the great commission

Bethel Assembly of God in Red Bluff takes seriously the great commission to: "Go into all the world, Mark 16:15". All are called to the mission field. Some perform it through our daily lives right where we live, and some go to other countries.

September 6th through September 15th, fourteen people from Bethel set off for Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The team consisted of Pastor Ron Fortenberry, Patt Brittain, Raymond Childers, Pam Diehl, Cynthia Hoofard, Jeff & Judy Mandolfo, Tom Mehringer, Wes and Shannon Niles, Kevin Quigley, Susie Sanders, Mike Stenberg

The General Council of the Honduran Assemblies of God planted over 100 (“Honduras100”) churches in the last few years throughout the countryside of Honduras. Most of these new church plants currently have no facilities in which to worship. These new congregations are having services outside under trees, many times without protection from bad weather, or inside small dwellings without sufficient space. “Honduras100” is an ambitious project to build 100 steel tabernacles over the next 4 years. This project is designed to change these circumstances by providing a simple, relatively inexpensive, easily built structural steel frame that would allow a congregation almost instant access out of the weather.

A tabernacle is a standard size steel structure, 36' wide and 48' long. Concrete footings, structural steel columns, structural steel roof frame, and 26 gauge galvanized sheet metal roofing is provided and constructed by a visiting team, or a team of local church members. They ask for $10,000 from each team who comes to help. That will buy the structure, sheet metal roof, install the foundation and buy enough cement, sand, and concrete blocks to wall in the structure. The rest will be left up to the congregation to do, but at least they will have a roof for protection from heat and rain, and will have some security with the walls. Not only did Bethel send the $10,000 for the project but also each team member paid for all of their own expenses, which included the flight, transportation, hotel and meals.

Bethel Assembly completed tabernacle number twenty-two in Sabana Grande, about a 40-minute drive south of Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. Our project in Sabana Grande, was a much needed project. The church has already had to move out of one house, and was renting another small house that was still too small. The congregation had to meet in small groups in various homes and came together once a month in a school. When that happened they had over 100 people in attendance. This new church building allowed them to worship together in one location.

I praise God for giving Red Bluff Bethel a heart for Missions. We have already begun to pray for our mission trip for 2008.

Now is the Time to Worship

Editor's note:
I'd heard about the worship ministry that Nella was doing with the college students and asked if she would be willing to share her heart with us and also provide a bit of background on this ministry

My name is Nella Schnase and I am very excited about this new service started mainly for college students and anyone going through a new journey in their lives. The idea of “Now Is the Time to Worship”came to me when I was sitting in church listening to my father speak on reaching people on your own level. I felt a strong calling to get other people my age together and praise to the One who gave us the freedom to do so.

In this calling I was very nervous about actually making it all happen. I have never been in charge of such a thing, but what I am sure of is that I knew this ministry was meant to start through me. I love music and I love God. He wanted me to put them together and make sure my eyes are on Him first and foremost. More about

Teaching from a grasp of Scripture

The Sermon on the Mount may have appeared at first to e without connection to the Scriptures. Their rabbis carefully built around the Law, following the traditional interpretations of the Scriptures. The rabbis followed a predictable path, citing the accepted authorities, always within the orthodox structure of ideas. But Jesus cited no one, except to use the traditions as a contrast. He did not obviously cite Scripture either. Yet Jesus was teaching from Scripture, he was teaching the intention of Scripture.

The Sermon on the Mount is carefully built on a Psalm about a Rock, although it is not obvious. Jesus followed the order of this Psalm, teaching the application of the meaning. He understood the meaning of the Scriptures; He taught what His Father revealed to him through Scriptures. Jesus was fulfilling Scripture; the Scriptures bore witness to Him. The teachings of Jesus are based on an understanding of Scripture, not on an orthodoxy built around it.

The message that Jesus preached is Scriptural, but it was not part of the orthodoxy. The kingdom of God is near; Scripture bears witness to this. But the traditional teachings did not express this The religious scholars had carefully analyzed Scriptures for centuries, but did not find the good news.
The intention of Scripture is build the life of Jesus Christ in us. Scripture cannot be understood in isolation from life; it is not just fact. Scripture is like DNA; a complete listing of human DNA is of little value itself. In order DNA to have meaning, it must be expression a living organism. then the intention of the code can be see; DNA is expressed in what it builds, and in the mechanisms that come from it.

In the same way, the Scriptures are to build life in a person; the true intention of Scripture can only be seen in a living man.

"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14

Teaching is to come from the Word made flesh.

North Valley Episcopal Ministry (NVEM) develops program to serve Latino families

The North Valley Episcopal Ministry (NVEM) is developing a program to serve Latino families in Northern California, for the purpose of spiritual and social care.

Led by The Rev. Maryly Adair, Regional Missioner of NVEM., and Deacon Olga Barrera, from the Diocese of Honduras, NVEM. has been networking with local agencies that serve the Latino community, in order to establish a Hispanic Episcopal ministry not currently available in the North State.

As reported in the Associated Press: "The Episcopal Church, through its Central and South American Province, has a direct connection to Latin Americans who want to serve here churches also want to connect with congregants on a cultural level, and Latin American clergy can tailor services "'The cultural identification and bonding that occur when a person of the same background is leading them, serving them and overall providing spiritual leadership is a big draw and it sustains people's faith.'"

Deacon Olga Barrera will be preaching and hosting a powerpoint presentation about the Episcopal Church, its work in Honduras, and establishing a ministry for the local Latino community at the following locations:

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 32 E. Walker Street, Orland, at 9 a.m., worship service only, on Sunday.

Nite Lite Ministries

Nite Lite Ministries held a special benefit concert for the Salvation Army on Saturday, Sept. 15. Nite Lite Ministries holds monthly concerts at various churches throughout the north state in the hope that churches can come together in unity to demonstrate God's love.

It encourages people to bring friends, both churched and unchurched, enjoy some contemporary music and see how God works in the lives of His people.

The Unified band is made up of people from six different churches in the area. They hope through this ministry that others will see unity, humility, and service as they work together for a common goal.
